Safety Considerations for FDM Printing

While Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is generally considered a safer type of 3D printing, there are still several safety aspects that need to be addressed.

Heat Bed and Printhead

During printing, the print bed plate can heat up to temperatures ranging from 60°C to 120°C. Touching it while printing can potentially cause burns. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid placing your hand on it, even if you need to save a failed print.

Similarly, contact with the printhead can result in severe burns, as it operates at temperatures between 220°C and 300°C with melted plastic.

High Volatility Organic Compounds (HVOCs)

While some hobbyists may downplay the risks, it is important to note that materials other than PLA and PETG, such as ABS and ASA, release HVOCs during printing. Therefore, using an enclosure and inline ventilation is essential.
